Klay 0.0.42

Hold N to drop a new clay layer right where your cursor points and drag it to the size you want, hold E to move, spin or scale the selection without leaving your tool, and a rotated clay layer's bounding box now turns with it.

New

Hold N to place new clay

Hold N and the new empty clay layer rides your cursor, its centre snapping onto the surface under it (or staying at the same depth over empty space), and dragging with the left button while N is held sizes it, which also sets how fine its detail will be; a quick tap still adds the layer where it always did.

Hold NHold N + left-drag to size
Hold E for a quick transform

From any tool, hold E and drag with the left button to move the selection across the screen, the right button to spin it or the middle button to scale it, then let go of E to return to the tool you were on; a quick tap still switches to the Gizmo tool.

Open a model straight from your files

Open an OBJ, FBX, Alembic, glTF, PLY, DAE or STL file with Klay from Windows Explorer and it starts right on the Import dialog for that model, skipping the welcome screen; select several and they come in together with one size choice. Klay now appears in the "Open with" list for these files, without taking over the app they already open in.

Blur, sharpen, expand and contract the mask from its card

The Mask tool card has a Blur | Sharpen bar and an Expand | Contract bar: click a side for one step, or hold and drag to keep going, with Rectangle and Lasso buttons for the marquee above them and Invert / Erase as buttons below. Sharpen tightens a soft edge back onto its middle, as in ZBrush and Blender, and Expand / Contract move the mask's edge out or in while keeping its softness. A whole drag undoes in one Ctrl+Z.

Pick any light from the Lantern

The Lantern's tool card now lists every light in the scene at the top, with its colour, type, on/off eye and intensity, so you can switch to another light, recolour it from its swatch, add one or turn one off without leaving the tool; the light's type is one row of buttons under the list, its settings sit in one card below, and area lights gain Focus.

Laser settings in the tool card

The Laser's floating bar is gone: its shapes and actions are now two rows of buttons at the top of the sidebar tool card (still there with the card closed, and holding Ctrl lights the action it swaps to), with depth, fill, flip, joint and stroke smoothing grouped underneath; a button that does nothing on the selected layer, like Create on a polygon mesh, is dimmed.

Remesh and Boolean take layered meshes

A mesh with sculpt layers or subdivision levels no longer blocks Remesh or Boolean: its layers are flattened into the level you are looking at and the operation just runs, and undoing a Remesh gives you the original back with its layers and levels.

Set your own maximum brush size

Every brush-size slider now ends in a small box showing its maximum: click it and type a bigger number to sculpt a large scene, or a smaller one to spend the whole slider on fine detail. Klay remembers it, and resizing the brush by dragging follows the same limit, in the tool card, the Brush panel, the Select tool and the radial menu.

Pen pressure drives smoothing, elastique and hardness

Polygon brushes get three new pen sliders under Pressure → size: pressure can now control how much the brush smooths, how strong its Elastique pull is, and how hard its edge is, so a light touch can glide softly and a firm press brings the full effect.

PBR as fast as PBR Fast

A PBR material now only pays for the effects it actually turns on: a plain one draws as fast as PBR Fast, and turning on GGX specular, clear coat, sheen or subsurface adds just that effect instead of slowing the object to about half the frame rate; one such material elsewhere in the scene no longer slows the others either.

Specular colour, right under Base colour

Every material now has a round Specular colour swatch just below Base colour, so you can tint its reflections without opening the Specular section, and it now works on PBR Fast too: a white swatch keeps PBR Fast exactly as fast as before, and a coloured one adds only that tint.

Material›Base colourPBR Fast
Specular effects only cost what you turn on

Turning on one Specular effect, such as Diffraction, Flakes or Retro-reflection, now adds just that effect to the object instead of switching the whole material to its heaviest look, so the frame rate barely moves in the viewport; RT likewise only prepares the effects your materials actually use, and gets them ready much sooner.

Glass shows its far side

A glass object in the viewport now shows its own back walls through the front, bent by the refraction and catching bright inner reflections at steep angles, so a glass cube reads as a solid block of glass instead of a window straight through to what is behind it, and it casts a lighter shadow that darkens as you raise the Tint and Thickness.

Press F over the outliner to find the selection

With the pointer over the outliner, the Frame key now opens the folders and groups hiding the selected object and scrolls the list to it, instead of doing nothing; over the viewport it still frames the camera.

Double-click to rename

Double-click any object, folder or layer in the outliner to rename it right where its name is: type, then Enter or click away to keep it, Esc to cancel. Rename in the right-click menu edits in place too, and double-clicking an object inside a folder renames the object; to select the whole folder, click the folder's own row.

Fixed

  • Pressure → size now works on polygon brushes: the brush size is the largest it gets, and a lighter touch draws smaller, instead of every stroke coming out at full size
  • With symmetry on, masking a clay layer now masks both sides, and the Rectangle and Lasso masks mirror on every object, instead of masking only the side you drew on
  • Isolate with several objects selected (the I key, the right-click menu or the eye button) now keeps all of them, instead of isolating just one and dropping the rest of the selection
  • Duplicate X now mirrors every selected object, works on a duplicated mesh, and works on a mesh with subdivision levels without flattening it first (the copy keeps the level you are looking at); toggling a sculpt layer on the mirrored copy now stays mirrored too
  • Turning on Transmission now makes an object see-through right away, showing the scene behind it, instead of only reflecting the sky until the scene was reopened
  • A rotated clay layer's bounding box now turns with the layer, instead of staying upright and growing as you rotated it
  • Dropping a .klay scene onto the window now opens it (asking to save your current scene first), instead of doing nothing
  • Laser cuts on a polygon mesh now always fill the hole cleanly: no gaps along the seam, no starburst fills, and a cut that touches an earlier one fills too. The few cuts that used to fill with long thin streaky triangles (it happened most with Split) now get an even surface like the rest. Drawing the Laser around a part that is already loose (a hand left floating after cutting through the arm) now deletes, splits or duplicates it too
  • Holding S to turn the lights while on the Laser tool no longer draws a laser cut at the same time; on the Mask tool it no longer draws a rectangle or lasso mask, or inverts or blurs the mask
  • Ctrl+Z now undoes Invert, Clear, Blur, Sharpen, the Rectangle and Lasso masks and the mask operators, on polygon meshes and clay layers alike, instead of skipping back to the stroke before them
  • Blur on the Mask card (or a click on the model with the Mask tool) now blurs a polygon mesh's mask, instead of doing nothing and holding up the card's other buttons
  • Local stroke no longer leaves stale patches trailing behind a fast stroke, a lazy-mouse stroke or an Elastique pull
  • The Laser no longer does nothing without a word on a mesh with subdivision levels or sculpt layers: a short notice with a red X now says why it won't cut, then fades away
  • Turning on RT or a Specular effect no longer freezes Klay for up to a minute the first time: the object shows without the effect for a moment while it gets ready, then the effect appears on its own, and the RT image restarts cleanly with it
  • Surface detail's Bump now reads as real relief (fine scratches, pits and pores that catch the light) instead of soft blotchy stains, and keeps the same strength when you change the Scale
  • Fire no longer breaks into thin horizontal streaks that stick out sideways from the flames, and no longer winds itself up into a spinning column
  • File › New now gives back the graphics memory the previous scene used, instead of staying gigabytes above a fresh launch after a long session
