New
Camera tool
The Camera tool turns the view into a camera viewfinder, with shutter, aperture, ISO, focal length and focus in a bar along the bottom. Clicking in the view sets the focus point, which stays sharp as you orbit, and the capture button saves the framed view and adds it to the Canvas. The Look button opens collapsible sections for the frame format, view transform, colour grade, raytracing samples, secondary bounces and sharpening, the denoiser (GPU or CPU, with its strength) and the overlays (rule of thirds, safe frame, level, histogram); Linear and AgX Punchy are new view transforms. The Auto button sets auto exposure, its metering, compensation and adaptation. Both are also available in an exhibition’s Camera mode.
Curve tool
The Curve tool draws a stroke and sweeps a profile along it as an editable mesh. Profiles are preset shapes or custom outlines with sharp, filleted or chamfered corners, and the card sets taper, twist, caps and a hollow wall. Physics lets dragged points swing or stretch the curve, Brushing reshapes many curves at once, and Bake turns a curve into a sculpt layer. Thickness changes along the curve blend smoothly into each other. The Smooth section relaxes the whole tube while keeping its volume, from a light touch to a very strong smoothing. Holding Ctrl turns the curve under the cursor red; a click deletes it, and dragging deletes every curve the cursor crosses.
Exhibitions and locked scenes
File › Save as Exhibition saves a .klaylock: an encrypted, view-only copy of the scene with its textures, HDRI, backplates and sounds packed inside. It opens with only Orbit, Walk and Camera, where Camera mode uses the Camera tool’s strip and shutter, and cannot be edited or exported. When the artist allows it, the bottom bar also offers a view menu (Unlit, PBR, PBR full, Raytrace) and a Scene button that switches between the scene’s lighting presets and material bindings. Scene presets can be renamed in the Lighting tab with a right-click or a double-click. The artist’s cameras are not shown. The home screen’s new Exhibitions tab lists curated locked scenes. Each work carries a piece number, such as KL.2026.001, and each artist has a profile page with a header image, portrait and biography. Open in browser, at the foot of the gallery’s list, opens the exhibitions on klaysculpt.com, where each work offers Open in Klay and Download. The sun and moon button at the top of the gallery switches it between light and dark. Settings › Exhibition › Culture is not my friend removes the Exhibitions tab from the home screen; it is off by default.
Speakers
A speaker plays an MP3 or WAV file inside a sphere in the scene, heard from its position as you orbit, walk or look around in VR. Each speaker sets its radius, volume, soft edge, looping, and what happens when you enter or leave it. A button mutes every speaker while you work.
Brush mixer and Global brush settings
The Mixer card blends three brushes of the same family on a triangle: drag the point toward a corner to give that brush more weight, and every setting of the three is blended into the brush in use. The card’s switch turns the mix on or off, and Save as brush keeps the result as a new preset. The Global card scales one operator, such as Smooth, across every Clay or Poly brush, from muted to double, with a single pressure response and Reset all.
Camera tracks
A camera can follow a track over a block of frames on the timeline. Tracks are drawn point by point or recorded by moving the view, then smoothed, resampled or edited with the gizmo. Each camera adds handheld drift, shake, lag and focus breathing, and keys for focal length, exposure, aperture and a focus point.
Cameras in the viewport
Other cameras are drawn in the viewport with their field of view and an optional name. With the Select, Move or Gizmo tool, clicking a camera selects it and the gizmo moves it; dropping it near a track places it on that track.
Camera monitor
A small monitor in a corner of the viewport shows the view through the active camera, in Unlit, PBR Fast or Raytrace shading. It can follow the timeline, the selected camera or a pinned one, and can be moved, resized or collapsed.
Sequence render and movies
A render job can be a Still or a Sequence. A sequence renders one camera’s block, or the whole timeline through the camera cuts, with In and Out handles to trim it. Output is MP4 (H.264 or H.265), ProRes 422 HQ or 4444, or an image sequence.
Camera aspect ratio
Each camera has an aspect ratio, from 2.39:1 to the portrait 9:16. The Camera tool shows it as the frame, and renders that follow the camera use it. In the Render tab, a job’s Format lists the same ratios beside Camera, and Size sets the long edge; Custom starts from the current size.
Video on the Canvas
Movies sent from the Render tab, and MP4 or MOV files dropped on the Canvas, play as video cards with a player bar, frame steps, speed and loop. Save frame places the current frame on the board as a PNG.
Extrude mask
The masked area of a polygon mesh can be extruded into a separate shell, with thickness, direction, smoothing and a rim shape, previewed live on the model. The result is a new layer, or is merged into or cut into the source mesh.
Posing with the gizmo
With Consider masking on, the Gizmo tool moves, rotates or scales only the unmasked part of a polygon mesh about the pivot, so a limb can be posed from its joint. A padlock beside the gizmo unlocks the pivot: the gizmo then moves and turns only itself, and the pivot’s position and orientation are saved with the object.
Compare
Selected objects and groups go into a list and are shown one at a time with a slider or Prev and Next. Layout places them side by side in a row, grid or column, and Bake positions keeps the arrangement.
Material bindings
A scene can keep several sets of material assignments and switch between them with one click. The materials are shared by all sets; each set records which material each object wears. The plus button adds a copy of the current set, the name under the buttons can be edited, and right-clicking a number duplicates, moves or deletes that set. Sets are saved with the scene.
Per-object display
Clicking an object’s icon in the outliner sets its colour and how it draws: Shaded, Dither, X-ray, Fill, Wire or Bounds. The same menu sets faceted normals, backfaces, shadows, render visibility and whether it can be selected.
Transform menu
A button on each outliner row opens its position, pivot, rotation and scale for typing, in the scene unit. Each channel can be reset or locked, and six slots store transforms; for a group, a slot stores the whole arrangement.
Rotator
A rotator turns all objects, or one outliner group, around a vertical axis over a block of frames on the timeline. It is moved with the gizmo, and R returns it to the centre of the scene.
Update review
After an update, a review lists what changed in your preferences, settings, brushes and presets before the home screen opens. Your preferences and shortcuts are kept, factory brushes and presets take the new version, and each item can be switched to Keep mine, Take new or Keep both. Brush size, strength and hardness always stay yours, and replaced files are kept in a backup folder.
Viewport action bar
A row of buttons in the lower-right corner of the viewport runs functions in one click; + adds one, right-click replaces or removes it, and press-and-hold reorders. Holding Space shows the bar alone, and releasing Space over a button runs it.
Rain water effects
The Rain card now shows only density, speed, wetness, tint and sound, with the rest under Water effects and Advanced. Rain has new water effects, each with its own switch: surfaces under a roof or overhang stay dry, walls facing the rain get wet, water runs down slopes and walls, droplets cling to slopes and slide, drops hang under overhangs, and puddles form on flat ground, filling hollows first. Raindrops can burst into small splashes where they land, and water drips from edges and corners onto the surface below.
Improved
Undo history scrub
Pressing Ctrl+Z twice in quick succession shows a history strip above the toolbar. Drag along it or use the mouse wheel to move through undo and redo steps. A single Ctrl+Z works as before. The strip closes after a few seconds without input, on Esc, or when you make a new edit.
Typed slider values
Every slider value can now be typed. The number highlights under the pointer; click it, enter a value and press Enter or click elsewhere to apply it, or press Esc to cancel. The value is kept within the slider’s range.
Gizmo tool card
A Transform section on the Gizmo tool card shows the selection’s position, pivot, rotation, scale and size for typing, with the same locks and actions as the outliner Transform menu. The values update when a drag ends.
Film grain
Film grain is now built from simulated film crystals, with presets for common film stocks, 16 mm, Super 8 and a digital sensor. It can be fixed or animated, and Follow camera ISO sets its strength from the camera’s ISO. In the raytraced view the grain is developed into the image itself.
Color correct
The section is reorganised in photo-editor order: White balance, Tone, Curve, Colour, Grading, Detail and Grain. A histogram sits at the top, Before shows the uncorrected image while held, and each section has its own Reset.
Brush icon colours
The Pick icon window has a Colour row with the same palette as Canvas groups, plus a custom colour. The icon and its name take the chosen colour on the toolbar, in the slot switcher, in the Vault and on the Brush panel; Default keeps the usual look.
Settings: Navigation
Orbit, pan and zoom are now set in Settings, each with its own combination of keys and a mouse button; the same controls are on the mouse panel of the keyboard map. A combination can use any key, such as C with the left button, or the middle or right button on its own. The Navigation key can also be any key, such as P: holding it navigates as Alt does. A key used this way is removed from any other shortcut, and the dialog names it before you apply. A new option, Orbit around stroke point, orbits around where the last stroke started; F returns to the usual centre. Void, as in ZBrush, lets a drag on empty space orbit, pan and zoom without holding a key; it turns off Allow outside stroke.
Settings: Interface colors
The Theme card has Panel and Text colors and a Contrast slider. Every surface, border and secondary label follows them, and Text on Auto turns dark on a light panel. Each color, including the accent, can be returned to its default.
Settings: Tablet and Scrolling
Tablet chooses how the pen is read: Automatic, Wintab compat or Windows Ink. Scrolling sets one mouse-wheel speed for the whole sidebar, which now scrolls smoothly.
Live instances of Clay layers
Clay layers now have Instance (live) and Instance X (live): a copy that follows every edit of the original, the second mirrored across X. A live copy adds almost no memory, and Make independent turns it into its own layer.
Camera card: Format and Exposure
The camera card has a Format sub-card for aspect ratio, bars and guides, and an Exposure sub-card for shutter, ISO, auto exposure and the view transform. Turning on depth of field now also turns on autofocus.
Render engines: Raytrace, PBR, Unlit
A render job uses Raytrace, PBR or Unlit. PBR renders now include ambient occlusion, fog, depth of field, bloom and the colour grade, as in the viewport.
Knife: bend the held line
A Knife line held with Shift has a handle at each end that bends it into a curve or a rounded corner, with optional angle snap. Clicking the centre dot cuts, and Latch hold keeps the line up without Shift.
Decimation
The Decimation dialog shows progress, and Cancel leaves the mesh unchanged. A GPU mode runs it on the graphics card, and LOD chain builds two to eight lighter copies in one press.
Emission: temperature and coat
Emission can be set by temperature in kelvin instead of a colour. Under coat places the glow beneath the clear coat, and Light the fog (RT) lets glowing objects light the fog.
Brush size and tessellation sharing
Share size across brushes keeps one size when switching brush, and Share values does the same for tessellation. The Shift brush has a Use primary brush size toggle.
Stamp depth graph and Dynamic masking
The Stamp brush’s Depth section shows the stamp’s outline at a light and a hard pen press. Dynamic masking generators have a Preview toggle and a Pressure sub-card.
Alpha brush detail
On polygon meshes, an alpha brush now lays the full image as separate stamps along the stroke, at the brush’s Spacing, instead of stretching the centre of the image along the stroke. Overlapping stamps keep their detail, rotation jitter turns each stamp individually, and 16-bit alphas keep their full depth.
Photoshop alphas
Brush alphas can be imported from Photoshop files (.psd and .psb, Grayscale or RGB, 8, 16 or 32-bit) and appear in the alpha library with a thumbnail. Klay reads the flattened image, so the file must be saved with Maximize Compatibility on.
Faster tabs and raytracing
The Material and Lighting tabs no longer pause on first open, and their thumbnails are kept between sessions. While a slider or light is dragged, the raytracer renders fewer frames so the interface stays responsive. Fog and light beams in the raytraced view clear up faster, with the same final image.
Raytrace settings in groups
The Raytrace settings are grouped into six cards: Quality, Light & image, Material offsets, Effects, Responsiveness and Advanced. A closed card shows a summary of its settings, and options that depend on a switch appear under it only while it is on. Every slider has a reset button.
Right-click menu: Create
Right-clicking an object opens a Create submenu with Light, Camera and New material. Light adds a Point, Sun, Spot, Area or Camera light placed from the current view, as the Lighting tab’s add button does; Camera adds a camera at the current view, as the Camera tab’s Camera button does; New material creates a material and assigns it to the selected object. Right-clicking an empty scene lists Light and Camera directly in its Create section. The + button in the Scene outliner header opens the same Create entries; Primitive has been removed from it.
Outliner and File menu
Saved scenes keep which outliner folders are open, and F over the outliner reveals the selection. The File menu now shows keyboard shortcuts.
Fixed
- Huion and other non-Wacom pen tablets now respond.
- Brush Dynamics on polygon meshes: Scatter places each stamp on the surface without tearing the stroke and now works on every stroke type, each stroke gets its own jitter pattern, pen pressure no longer changes the jitter, and speed settings behave the same at any frame rate.
- A poly brush stroke that starts off the model now begins as soon as the pointer reaches the surface. Brush panel > Stroke > Allow outside stroke, on by default.
- A UI scale below 100% no longer pushes the toolbar and sidebar off the screen. The scale is remembered per screen.
- Pressing Apply in the keyboard map no longer closes Klay.
- Exporting a group writes every object inside it, with each object kept separate in FBX, Alembic and glTF. Right-click a group to use Export group. File > Export Selected previously wrote only the group’s first object.
- In the Render tab, a render’s status line now says when it shows the last render’s size and gives the size of the next render.
- Volumetric fog, mist, dust, haze and fog clouds now reopen with the scene they were saved in.
- Klay no longer closes right after launch on Intel Iris Xe integrated graphics.
- Orbiting, panning and zooming no longer stutter in large scenes.
- Dragging a light with the Lantern tool no longer stutters at regular intervals after Klay has been open for a while.
- FBX meshes import welded again, and Delete UVs closes every UV seam.
- Rebuild Subdivision Levels works on more meshes, including ZBrush exports without UVs.
- Grab, Snakehook and Elastique on Clay layers follow symmetry.
- Tessellation with Max subdivision Off now reaches the Density setting in one stroke.
- Depth-of-field focus picks the surface under the pointer, and Point focus holds while the camera moves.
- Objects in front of a raytraced background plate have smooth edges.
- The interface no longer slows down in the raytraced view with Volumetric on.
- Rain, snow and mist now stay completely still in the raytraced view instead of slowly drifting, and rain, including its splashes and drips, blurs with the raytraced depth of field. Wet surfaces, ripples and splashes from rain now also appear in the raytraced view. Rain with Refraction on no longer shows a band of denser rain around objects, and rain and snow no longer flicker or fall through a roof when Sky shelter is on.
- The raytracer no longer runs while the Canvas tab is open, or restarts after opening a large scene.
- A new Lattice cage fits the object’s current shape.
- Right-clicking a selected object inside a group opens that object’s menu.
- With the timeline open, Space opens the toolbar drawer again.
- The Draw operator’s reset in Operator Blend now goes to 0, and Smooth no longer goes below 0.
- The installer asks which file types open in Klay.
- A new scene starts with the raytraced view off and neutral exposure.
